City of Detroit offices scheduled to be closed Nov. 25 & 26 for Thanksgiving holiday


Most City of Detroit offices are closed on Thursday, Nov. 25 & Friday, Nov. 26 for the Thanksgiving holiday. However, certain vital City services will be provided. 

The Department of Public Works (DPW) will not collect trash, bulk items, recycling or yard waste on Thanksgiving Day on Thursday, Nov. 25. Thursday’s collection will take place on Friday, Nov. 26, while Friday’s collection will take place on Saturday, Nov. 27. 

In addition to collection, the DPW drop-off locations will be closed on Nov. 25, with regular hours of 8:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. resuming on Friday, Nov. 26 and Saturday, Nov. 27.

The Detroit Department of Transportation will operate on a Sunday schedule on Thanksgiving Day.  For bus schedules, visit www.detroitmi.gov/ddot

The Detroit People Mover remains closed for now. Detroit Municipal Parking Residents and visitors can enjoy free metered street parking across the city from Nov. 25-28, with parking enforcement suspended. Normal parking enforcement resumes on Monday, Nov. 29.

The Ford and Eastern Market garages business hours for the Thanksgiving holiday are:

Ford Underground Garage

  • Thursday, Nov. 25 from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Friday, Nov. 26 from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Eastern Market Garage

  • Thursday, Nov. 25 from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Friday, Nov. 26 - CLOSED

Normal business hours will resume Monday, November 29.

COVID-19  Vaccination and Testing Locations These vaccination locations will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 25 and Friday, Nov. 26, with normal hours resuming on Monday, Nov. 29. 

  • TCF Center Drive-Thru at 89 Steve Yzerman Drive
  • Northwest Activities Center at 18100 Meyers
  • Clark Park at 1130 Clark Ave.
  • Clemente Rec Center at 2631 Bagley
  • Farwell Recreation Center at 2711 E. Outer Drive
  • Samaritan Center at 5555 Conner

The Joseph Walker Williams Center, where COVID-19 testing is provided, also will be closed on Nov. 25 & 26.

Although offices may be closed, many City services, such as tax and fee payments, permit applications, and obtaining DDOT passes, are available online at www.detroitmi.gov. Residents wishing to make a request for service, such as removal of illegal dumping, reporting a non-working streetlight, abandoned vehicle, or other issues, are encouraged to use the Improve Detroit app.
