Mayor's Welcoming Letter

Welcome to the City of Detroit!

The Office of Immigrant Affairs (OIA) is here to welcome and support immigrants in their integration efforts.

The City of Detroit was established more than three hundred years ago, and since that time, diversity and inclusion have been the backbone of our great city. Throughout its history, Detroit's industry and culture have remained world-class, in part, due to the contributions of our immigrant and first-generation populations. Although, like many historical cities, we've had our challenges, Detroit's residents consider the celebration of our diverse community a trademark of life in “The D.”

More than any other city within the United States, Detroit’s native residents are enthusiastic in their efforts to help immigrant residents secure America's promise. With more than 35,000 foreign-born residents from throughout the world, the City of Detroit has a long history of native residents and newcomers collaborating to build viable communities.

I, too, am committed to the success of all of our communities; in addition to providing useful information on settling into everyday life in the City of Detroit to newly arrived residents, the Office for Immigrant Affairs is also charged with promoting economic empowerment within foreign-born communities. OIA is dedicated to delivering services with the highest level of integrity - and supports new and existing immigrant communities and residents by creating programs and ensuring access to resources that elevate our quality of life.

On behalf of the City of Detroit, I welcome all who seek opportunity and refuge. And I thank you for making the City of Detroit your home.

Sincerely,

Mayor Duggan
