Truck Routes Ordinance

Detroit is hoping to enact a truck route ordinance that will help better manage trucks and truck movements throughout the City. This page will hold updates about the ordinance and the implementation plan.

Ordinance Background

The presence of trucks in Detroit is a long-standing issue.

Years of efforts by residents have positioned the City to establish a truck routes ordinance.

  • Community truck counts
  • Community risk assessments
  • Toxic tours
  • Diesel emissions tracking
  • Community noise study

Implementation Plan

In addition to developing the ordinance itself, the City is also developing an implementation plan with the aim of preparing the City to implement and enforce the ordinance once enacted. It is an action-based plan to reduce the impacts of freight trucks on local streets. There are many individual strategies in the plan that will work together to help implement the goals of the ordinance. The City will be inviting feedback from the public on the implementation plan strategies prior to finalization.

Each strategy will follow the same template, and will include the following information:

  •  "Background" explaining why the strategy is important
  • "Objectives" to outline high level goals of the strategy
  • "Implementation Steps" that will clearly outline the steps needed to get the City from where we are today to our end goal of implementing the strategy effectively
  • "Schedule" to set clear expectations for a feasible timeline
  • "Cost and Feasibility"  to set clarity on what aspects have funding identified and what other roadblocks or challenges may exist to implementing the strategy
