Daffodils are blooming across the City of Detroit, bringing rivers and fields of gold, white and yellow to several neighborhoods, parks, and boulevards. Residents and tourists alike will be able to welcome in Spring and tour the areas these beautiful blooms have been planted.

Over the past several years, the city’s General Services Department has planted a whopping 2.5 million daffodil bulbs that are now signaling the return of Spring in Detroit.  This fall, 500,000 to 600,000 bulbs are expected to be planted during a brief, but optimal, 20-day window in October and November. In addition to the bulbs the city purchases, nonprofit organization Daffodils4Detroit plans to donate an additional 100,000 bulbs, which they have been doing since 2012.

“Detroit’s beautiful blooms came early for us this year,” said Barry Burton, Project Manager, Landscape Design Unit, for the City of Detroit. “The daffodils are blooming three weeks early thanks to our mild winter, a winter where we only saw five sunny days in total! These brilliant blooms are a great way to usher in Spring.”

Under Burton’s leadership and direction, Devin Lyons, Floriculture Manager and his staff, Ranaldo Brown and Carolyn Johnson, have really taken ownership of the project. Lyons said he’s very proud of the work he’s done to help beautify the city. “It takes the whole crew working together to get these daffodil bulbs in the ground, given the short planting season,” said Lyons. “Seeing the beautiful result of our hard work now as we celebrate these warm days of Spring is worth all the hard work.”
