Following appointment by Mayor Mike Duggan and confirmation by the Detroit City Council, Tamara Liberty Smith is the new Police Commissioner for District 1.

Police Commissioner Smith began serving on the Board of Police Commissioners during the week of October 23, 2023.

She fills the vacancy left by the July resignation of Bryan Ferguson, whom District 1 voters elected in 2021 to a four-year term that began in January 2022.
