How to get tested?

To ensure that all residents have access to COVID-19 testing, Rapid COVID-19 testing is available at the Joseph Walker Williams Community Center, 8431 Rosa Parks Blvd. Testing will be open Monday-Friday, 7 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. 

  • Starting Tuesday February 22, 2020 all general public will receive PCR Saliva test at Joseph Walker Williams. *Note you should not drink anything within 30 minutes of arriving to your test. 


Who can go to the Rapid testing sites?

  • Free Rapid COVID-19 testing is available to people who live or work in the City of Detroit. No prescription is necessary.

Next Steps After Testing

When will I receive my test results?

Your test results should be available in 48 hours, which will be texted to you in a secure message from the Detroit Health
Department. If you did not receive your results after 48 hours, please contact the COVID-
19 Test Result Hotline at 313-876-4444. For all COVID related questions, contact your
primary care physician or the Detroit Health Department COVID-19 Resource Hotline at
313-876-4000.


If you have worsening symptoms prior to receiving your test results returning, including
severe shortness of breath or high fever, seek medical attention immediately.
Remember to wear a face mask or other cloth covering prior to entering any healthcare
facility.


 

What should I do while I am waiting for my results?

Most patients with COVID-19 have mild symptoms and recover on their own. Resting, staying hydrated, and sleeping are typically helpful. Treat your symptoms with oral fluids, medicines for fevers, cough, pain, etc.

  • Stay home and home-isolate, except to get medical care. Do not have visitors over.
  • Limit going outside your home, except for getting medical care. Only get medical care if it is absolutely necessary.
  • Wear a facemask around other people and continue social distancing.
  • Clean all “high-touch” surfaces every day, such as door knobs, phones, toilets with household cleaning sprays. Don’t share household items, such as glasses, towels or bedding.
  • Separate yourself from other people and animals in your home.
  • Cover your coughs and sneezes and immediately wash your hands and throw away used tissues in a lined trash can.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, clean your hands with an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol, covering all surfaces of your hands and rubbing them together until they feel dry. Soap and water is preferred if hands are visibly dirty. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Monitor your symptoms. Seek prompt medical attention if your illness is worsening (e.g., difficulty breathing, high fever). Before seeking care, call your healthcare provider and tell them that you have, or are being evaluated for, COVID-19. Put on a facemask before you enter the facility. These steps will help the healthcare provider’s office to keep other people in the office or waiting room from getting infected or exposed.

What's the difference between Isolation & Quarantine?

 

Isolation: Indicated ONLY for individuals who have tested positive for COVID-19.

Quarantine: Indicated ONLY for individuals who have not tested positive for COVID-19, but have experienced a recent, high-risk exposure as a "close contact"

*If you are in Quarantine and test positive for COVID-19, or begin to exhibit COVID-19-like symptoms, then you move to being in Isolation.

**During both Quarantine and Isolation, one must separate from others. This includes the use of physical barriers. One should have a designated area within the home in which to stay. Meals should be taken separately from all others. Precautions should be taken not to share any dining utensils, toiletries, towels, bedlinens, or other personal items. Shared spaces should be disinfected regularly. If physical separation is not possible within the home, social distancing and constant mask usage should be adhered to.

 

When can I stop home isolation?

For People with Symptoms or Test Positive for COVID-19 After:

  • A MINIMUM 5-day period from date of positive COVID-19 test. If fever is ongoing, or if there are any severe disease symptoms, isolation should be extended until 24 hours after being completely fever-free (without the use of fever-reducing medication), AND without any worsening symptoms.
  • Recommended retest immediately after last day of isolation
  • Mask for 5 days after isolation
  • If high-risk (immunocompromised, required hospitalization, etc.), then at least 10 days of isolation is necessary and should be guided by a physician
     

For People without Symptoms/Asymptomatic:

  • A 5-day period from date of positive COVID-19 test
  • Recommended retest immediately after day 5
  • Mask for days 5-10.

 

 

What should others at your home do while you wait for your results?

  • Help you follow the doctor’s instructions.
  • Help you monitor your symptoms and if worsening symptoms call 911.
  • Stay in another room. Household members should stay in another room or be separated from you as much as possible. Household members should use a separate bedroom and bathroom, if available.
  • Ensure good airflow is occurring in your home, such as by an air conditioner or an opened window, weather permitting.
  • Wash your hands often and avoid touching your face.
  • Wear a facemask when you are in the same room and gloves when you come in contact with bodily fluids.
  • Wash laundry thoroughly.
  • Avoid sharing personal household items with the patient. You should not share dishes, drinking glasses, cups, eating utensils, towels, bedding, or other items.


What if my test results are positive?

  • Stay home. Most people with COVID-19 have mild symptoms and can recover at home without medical care. Do not leave your home, except to get medical care. Do not visit public areas.
  • Take care of yourself. Get rest and stay hydrated. Take over-the-counter medicines, such as acetaminophen, to help you feel better.
  • Stay in touch with your doctor and call before you get medical care. Be sure to get care if you have trouble breathing or have any other emergency warning signs, or if you think it is an emergency.
  • Avoid public transportation, ride-sharing, or taxis.
  • As much as possible, stay in a specific room and away from other people and pets in your home.
  • Tell your close contacts that they may have been exposed to COVID-19. An infected person can spread COVID-19 starting 48 hours (or 2 days) before the person has any symptoms or tests positive.
