“Freedom Summer” continues with the Civil Rights, Inclusion, and Opportunity (CRIO) Department

Freedom Summer

 

DETROIT – The City of Detroit Civil Rights, Inclusion, and Opportunity (CRIO) Department is continuing a summer-long celebration of freedom with a series of thought-provoking virtual conversations and in-person events celebrating Black culture and educating viewers on important issues impacting the Black community. Topics will empower viewers to engage in relevant discussions to offer healing, enlightenment, and empowerment to the black community in celebration of freedom.

The Detroit Civil Rights, Inclusion & Opportunity Department has also partnered with numerous community leaders to host a series of virtual panel discussions through August as part of “Freedom Summer.” The series, Changing the Narrative, will address issues of equity, wealth, and justice.

All virtual conversations will be live-streamed from the Civil Rights, Inclusion, and Opportunity Department’s Facebook page. The schedule is as follows:

Freedom Summer Schedule

  • Wednesday, July 21, 4PM - What is Equity with the City of Detroit Equity Council
  • Friday, July 23, 11AM - 8PM – A day of Celebration in Spirit Plaza featuring music, art, food trucks and cultural activities w. Dr. Darius from WJLB, DJ Righteous, 313 Live Experience, Detroit Opera House, Spoken Word Artist, Dillon Brown, The Lobster Food Truck, Snobiz (snow cone truck), Curbside, The Smoothie Bus
  • Wednesday, August 4, 4PM – The Power of Policy w. Kim Rustem and Megan Moslimani
  • Wednesday, August 18, 4PM - Equity Vs. Equality w. Anika Goss, Lauren Hood, Dana Williams, Derrick Edwards

As part of the summer-long effort, CRIO is inviting residents to participate in the celebration of Black culture by participating in the #WhatisFreeDom campaign. The social media campaign offers two opportunities for participation:

Option #1

  1. Record a:30-:45 second video stating in your own words: What freedom means to you. 
  2. Upload the video to your social media platforms with the hashtag #WhatisFreeDom?

Option #2

  1. Post a picture and in the caption share what freedom means to you. Be sure to include the hashtag #WhatisFreeDom?
