Sentinel Flu Surveillance Network

This is a collaborative effort between the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), state and local health care providers, and volunteer sentinel clinicians to monitor the impact of influenza in Michigan each year. Through this surveillance network the total number of patient visits, as well as the number of patient visits for influenza-like illness (ILI), are recorded within five age categories:

  • 0-4 years
  • 5-24 years
  • 25-49 years
  • 50-64 years
  • 65+ years

Respiratory specimens from a sample of patients with ILI are also collected in order to panel test for respiratory virus at no charge by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) Laboratory.
