Civil Rights Team

The Civil Rights Team receives, investigates and makes findings on discrimination complaints in the areas of employment, housing, education, public service, commercial space, medical care facilities and public accommodations to any person who believes they have been discriminated against on the basis of race, color, religious beliefs, national origin, age, height, weight, familial status, marital status, disability, public benefit status, sex, sexual orientation, or gender identity or expression within the City of Detroit.  For City of Detroit employees the Civil Rights Team is tasked with investigating complaints of workplace violence. The Civil Rights Team also provides discrimination, workplace violence, sensitivity and inclusion trainings and outreach for the City of Detroit employees and residents. This authority is given under the jurisdiction of Chapter 23 of the City of Detroit Code of Ordinances. Ensuring compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and other related state and federal laws is also key responsibility of the CRIO team, as well as compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
