DDOT Local Advisory Council

Purpose & Responsibilities:

The purpose of the Local Advisory Council (LAC) is to serve as the foundation for assessing, planning and strengthening public transportation services in the community and to provide recommendations and input to local public transportation providers and other governing entities.  There are a few things every LAC must have:

  • Every transit system in Michigan must have an LAC.
  • At least half of the LAC must be people representing seniors and people with disabilities.
  • It must meet at least once a year.
  • It must review and comment on the transit system’s accessibility plan.

Members

How LAC Members Are Selected

Local Advisory Council (LAC) members are selected through a standardized and transparent process managed by the DDOT Office of Compliance. When a vacancy occurs, applications are accepted through public notice and community outreach.

Applicants must meet district and representation requirements, including maintaining a membership composition in which at least 50% are older adults or persons with disabilities. Applications are reviewed for eligibility and compliance with LAC bylaws. Qualified candidates are interviewed and recommended by current LAC members based on their ability to effectively represent individuals with disabilities and older adults within DDOT's service area.  To complete an application to become a Local Advisory Council member, click here.
