Mechanical Inspection Team

The Mechanical Inspection Team of the Construction Division of Buildings, Safety, Engineering, and Environmental (BSEED) is responsible for approving the registration of licenses of mechanical contractors and permits inspections of mechanical installations, repairs, boilers located in private residences and boilers in small apartments with only 5 units. The team also handles code questions - i.e., furnaces, HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning), ductwork, solar heating, refrigeration, underground, and above-ground tanks - and is also part of the Fire Alarm Inspection team.

Step-By-Step Instructions for completing the Application for Renewal or Registration of Contractor License (Mechanical) are listed below. This document is intended to assist the applicant in properly completing the form. It is important that the instructions are followed closely to ensure that the application is processed in a timely manner.

between the hours of 8:00 am - 4:00 pm Monday through Friday. 

Applicant must have a current and valid State of Michigan issued Master Mechanical License/Mechanical Contractors License before he/she can apply for Renewal/Registration with the City of Detroit. If the applicant holds only a Mechanical Contractors License, he/she must hire a Master Mechanic before he/she can renew or register his contractor license.  Note: The application must be notarized. Please be advised that the department has a Notary Public on-site.
 

Step 3:    
Documentation required:
Registration: Current Driver's License or State ID. Current State of Michigan issued Master Mechanical License and Mechanical Contractor License.
Renewal: Current Driver's License or State ID. If Master mechanic hired is Licensed with the State of Michigan, Mechanical Division will require a copy of the current Master Mechanic License. 
Note: Make checks (starter checks are not accepted) payable to: "Treasury City of Detroit". We also accept cash, credit cards (Master Card, Visa, or Discover only), money orders, and cashier's checks.
Fees: 

If the application is submitted by mail, the License will be mailed to the applicant. This process takes 5 - 10 business days.
If the application is submitted in person, the License is issued to the applicant in person on the same day.
 

Step 4:
A Licenses & Permits (L&P) resource or a supervisor in the Mechanical Division (if L&P can't approve) reviews and verifies the information on the application and approves it with his/her signature.
 

Step 5:
Applicant pays applicable fees at the L&P Cashier station.
 

Step 6:
License is issued the same day (If by mail - 5 to 10 days to process license).
