The Energy Division is committed to advancing Detroit’s energy efficiency and renewable energy adoption. We work to create a more sustainable future by adopting and administering an energy benchmarking ordinance, powering the City with solar energy generated in our own neighborhoods, and helping businesses and multifamily properties reduce their energy consumption. Through collaboration with community partners, we empower Detroiters to embrace clean energy solutions that benefit both the environment and the local economy.

Project Updates
 

  1. 2024 and 2025 Energy Benchmarking Results 
    • The Office of Sustainability phased the administration of the Benchmarking Ordinance which requires buildings 25,000 SFT and greater to report their energy and water data to the City through Energy Star Portfolio.

  2. Energy Efficiency and Solar Roadmap​
    • Non-profit and houses of worship are eligible to apply for our Energy Efficiency and Solar Roadmap. 
      In 2025, the Office of Sustainability held workshops and assisted building owners with energy assessments. Stay tuned for futured opportunities in 2026.
  3. Detroit 2030 District support available for select building types​
    • One-on-one technical assistance is available for non-profits, houses of worship, childcare centers and affordable multifamily properties.​
    • District events are being held to support building owners.
  4. Annual Detroit Energy Challenge Award Breakfast in June
    • This annual event recognizes building owners and managers for lower their energy use as compared to the previous year. Register for the event here!
