How Do I Turn On/Transfer/Turn Off Water Service

Establish New Service (Turn-On)

In order to establish new water and sewer service with the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department (DWSD), read or download the Establish New Service flier with complete instructions, and take one of the following steps:

  1. For the fastest service, using a mobile device or computer, complete the online Application for Water & Sewer Service or
  2. Print and completely fill out a paper Application for Water & Sewer Service and mail the completed application with the required documentation (see below for list) to the Detroit Water & Sewerage Department, Customer Service, 735 Randolph Street, Detroit, MI 48226.
  • Residential Homeowners and Landlords:
    • Government-issued ID (driver's license, Detroit ID, state identification or passport)
    • Social Security number
    • Copy of your registered deed or property transfer affidavit
    • If placing in a business name, must provide articles of incorporation and Employer Identification Number
  • Residential Tenants:
    • Government-issued ID (driver's license, state identification or passport)
    • Social Security number
    • Official lease agreement stating you have responsibility for the water account at that address

Transferring Water Service

Do you want to transfer water service at your property into someone else's name? Call DWSD Customer Service at 313-267-8000.

Temporarily Interrupt Service (Turn-Off)

Are you having a plumbing repair at your property? Are you leaving the area for an extended vacation? DWSD can temporarily turn off your water service. Authorized account holders may request a temporary service turn-off that can be restored upon your request. Call DWSD Customer Service at 313-267-8000.

Discontinue Service (Turn-Off)

Are you selling your property to a new buyer? Are you vacating your property? Depending on the situation, DWSD can get a closing meter reading and/or turn-off the water service. Authorized account holders can make this type of request. Call DWSD Customer Service at 313-267-8000. You will need to pay your balance, either before turn-off or once billed after turn-off, depending on the account status. If a rental property, click here.
