October 2022
June 2022 - August 2022
- Site clearing of the Warren to Joy segment of the Joe Louis Greenway broke ground in May of 2021
- Earthwork operations and construction were kicked off in Fall of 2021.
- Grading, retaining wall and fence installation continue to take place in Spring of 2022
- Concrete pouring of pathways kicked off during the Summer of 2022.
- This 1-mile segment is expected to be accessible by Fall of 2022.
September 2021 - May 2022
Construction work along Phase One of the Joe Louis Greenway (JLG) began in early September 2021. Following site clearing work performed last spring by Detroit Grounds Crew, general contractor Major Cement has removed from the former Conrail property from Warren northward to Joy Avenue:
- more than 6,500 CY of mixed debris – 450+ tandem trucks worth!
- more than 2,500 CY of chipped wood materials
- hundreds of scrap tires
- hundreds of tons of remnant concrete and steel
In the past month, the contractor has worked around weather, holidays and COVID to continue work in advance of mass earthwork operations planned for the spring. Activities included:
- laying of greenway underdrain pipes
- installation of stormwater structures and concrete pipe
- select improvements for electrical and fiber optic utility infrastructure
- construction of nearly 2000 LF of retaining walls
In the coming months, residents and local businesses can expect to see
- roadway improvements along Tireman and Joy Avenues, between Greenlawn and Alpine
- sidewalk widening and curb replacement
- improved crosswalks, speed tables, crossing beacons, and accessible ramps
- mass grading activities, including hauling and spreading of topsoil
- select areas of new welded wire / metal panel fencing
The contractor is working with the City to keep residents and local businesses aware of construction progress and planned activities.
Groundbreaking
Before Photo (Tireman Land clearing) and After Photo (Phase 1 Eye-Level View)
Phase 1 will include separate paths for slow and fast users (such as walkers and cyclists) and will provide safe street crossings and neighborhood connections. Not only will this phase include walking and bike paths, it will also include a new park at Warren Avenue with a playground, fitness equipment, and a pavilion.
