The City of Detroit is committed to ensuring all residents have access to the technology and skills necessary for full participation in modern society. The Office of Technology, Adoption and Growth (TAG) serves as a trusted resource to bridge the gap between learning technology with its potential to benefit Detroit residents. TAG's strategic focus is on achieving citywide tech adoption through three key initiatives: providing access to connectivity devices, offering tech learning and education, and establishing a sustainable tech ecosystem through collaboration. Detroit achieves this by channeling resources through community-based organizations to provide essential components like affordable high-speed internet, smart devices (laptops/tablets), digital literacy courses, and IT workforce training (including apprenticeship, internship, and job placement).
The Office of Technology Adoption and Growth is working to improve connectivity across Detroit through devices and subsidized service provider plans, advanced technology skilling, and economic opportunity. Addressing these issues is vital for economic growth, as 80% of the most in-demand jobs in Detroit that offer a living wage require digital skills. Residents with digital skills are more likely to be employed and to earn a living wage.
Widespread tech adoption delivers benefits that impacts residents directly. TAG is dedicated to growing a tech talent pool that is attractive to employers and is better equipped to fill local jobs. Work alongside Detroit businesses, including small and legacy small to provide tools that improve business service, and quality. We work alongside our community partners to act as leaders in digital empowerment, to show residents how leveraging basic tech skills like accessing telehealth services, the ability to work from home, and researching information online can be a pathway into the tech industry
Digital Divide: This is the gap between those who have affordable access, skills, and support to effectively engage online and those who do not. As technology constantly evolves, the digital divide prevents equitable participation and opportunity in all parts of life, disproportionately affecting people of color, Indigenous peoples, households with low incomes, people with disabilities, people in rural areas, and older adults.
The Office of Digital Equity & Inclusion has identified the digital gaps we can provide solutions that will address over 80% of the obstacles clearly defined in the “digital divide”. Our office work is guided by the three DEI pilars.
