Elevator Journeyperson Checklist

Step 1:
Step-By-Step Instructions for Completing the Application for License As Elevator Journeyperson, Contractor (Limited or Unlimited). This document will guide you on how to complete the application accurately to ensure approval in a timely manner.
Step 2:
Print application form from the City of Detroit website or pick up an application at the City of Detroit Elevator Division in Room 408 of the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center. Complete and submit the application along with all required information and supporting documentation. 

Qualifications for Application for License as Journeyperson or Contractor (Limited or Unlimited):

 (1) Minimum three (3) years of experience as an Elevator Contractor, Serviceman, Maintenance or Repair Person in the Elevator industry is required as a pre-requisite for the Journeyperson's Examination and five (5) years for the Elevator Contractor Examination
 (2) One (1) year of this experience may be waived if the applicant possesses a degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering from a recognized College or University
 (3) Two (2) character references are required from a Journeyman person (current or previous employer working in the Elevator Industry)

Evidence of the above experience is required from present and/or previous employers and will be retained by the Elevator Division, along with the application, and will not be returned. Exception: Other acceptable documentation may be provided. Note: Only (1) one type of License can be selected at any given time. Applicant can hold more than one license at the same time, but can not apply for all at the same time. A separate application will be needed for each license type. The applicant has to have one license for a period of time before applying for another type of license. The application must be submitted in person (Typewritten or Handwritten). This process generally takes 30 days depending on available Examination dates.
Step 3:
Submit application with proper documentation and fees in person to the Buildings, Safety Engineering, and Environmental Department located on the 4th floor of the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center.  A Written Examination date will be provided/scheduled at the time of submitting the application. The application must be submitted to the Examination Department (3) three days prior to the test date. Note: If the applicant's credentials are from out of state, please allow fourteen (14) days for the Elevator Division to review and verify the credentials.
Documentation required:
 (1) Proof of identification, such as a Drivers' License or a State Identification Card.

 (2) Minimum three (3) years of experience as an Elevator Contractor, Serviceman, Maintenance or Repair Person in the Elevator industry is required as a pre-requisite for the Journeyperson's Examination and five (5) years for Elevator Contractor Examination
 (3) One (1) year of this experience may be waived if the applicant possesses a degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering from a recognized College or University

 (4) Two (2) character references are required from a Journeyman person (current or previous employer working in the Elevator Industry).

Step 4:
Exams are scheduled in Room 408 at the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center on the 2nd Wednesday of each month at 8:00 a.m.  Contact the Examination Department for any revised date in the event a legal holiday falls on the second Wednesday of the month. Note: If there are any discrepancies in the documentation provided prior to the exam, the applicant will be contacted and the discrepancies will need to be rectified before the examination.
Step 5:
Written exam scores are provided to the examinee within a week by phone and mail.
If Pass: The notification sent to the examinee will provide the Written Exam score and scheduled Date and time of the Oral Exam.
If Fail: The applicant can retake the Written Exam after 90 Days.
Note: Oral exams cannot be taken without passing the written examination.
Step 6:
Oral exams are scheduled by the City of Detroit Examiner. To schedule an exam, please visit Room 408 of the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center.
Step 7: 
If Pass: Applicant must pay applicable license fees (Elevator Journeyperson: $45.00, Elevator Contractor: $142.00). The license will be issued the same day by the Licenses & Permits Division located on the 4th floor of the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center.
Step 8: 
License is issued to the applicant.
