September 2021 - May 2022

Construction work along Phase One of the Joe Louis Greenway (JLG) began in early September 2021. Following site clearing work performed last spring by Detroit Grounds Crew, general contractor Major Cement has removed from the former Conrail property from Warren northward to Joy Avenue:

  • more than 6,500 CY of mixed debris – 450+ tandem trucks worth!
  • more than 2,500 CY of chipped wood materials
  • hundreds of scrap tires
  • hundreds of tons of remnant concrete and steel

In the past month, the contractor has worked around weather, holidays and COVID to continue work in advance of mass earthwork operations planned for the spring. Activities included:

  • laying of greenway underdrain pipes
  • installation of stormwater structures and concrete pipe
  • select improvements for electrical and fiber optic utility infrastructure
  • construction of nearly 2000 LF of retaining walls

In the coming months, residents and local businesses can expect to see

  • roadway improvements along Tireman and Joy Avenues, between Greenlawn and Alpine
  • sidewalk widening and curb replacement
  • improved crosswalks, speed tables, crossing beacons, and accessible ramps
  • mass grading activities, including hauling and spreading of topsoil
  • select areas of new welded wire / metal panel fencing

The contractor is working with the City to keep residents and local businesses aware of construction progress and planned activities.
